Surfaces Beyond the Surficial

Exploring further into unconventional surfaces that are not limited to common materials like woods, plastic, metals, and glass. The project focuses on agar agar as a main binding agent that binds common ingredients that can be found around us to push the boundaries of what can be called a surface.

brief:
Students are encouraged to explore the notion of surfaces beyond their physical attributes or objectivity. Start by breaking down the materials or the conditions – where do they come from or how do they come about, how to construct/deconstruct them, what can they become, etcetera? This is the opportunity to delve deep to explore the relationships between surfaces and how humanity.

Deliverables:

"End product" l Booklet l Documentation

T H R E E   V O L U M E S
Three volumes focusing on different parts of the project. These volumes would incorporate the contents of the end product, documentations and accompanying booklet

 V O L U M E    O N E
Agar, the science and the ingredients
This volume focuses on the origins of agar and how it can be used as a binding agent. A catalogue of potential ingredients can also be found on this page along with its properties, history and name.
V O L U M E    T W O
This volume focuses on creating thin sheets from different combinations of ingredients from volume one. All combination uses agar agar as a binding agent. All experiments were then analyzed for their properties and characteristics.
V O L U M E    T H R E E
This volume focuses on creating solid objects from these ingredients in combination with agar agar. Mini stools were hence made to explore the characteristics of these materials. All properties were then noted down onto the book.
V O L U M E    T H R E E
This section focuses on analyzing these properties and finding new ways to enhance the strength of the material. The book will then give suggestions for anyone who would continue these series on the possibilities of better materials.
